Multi-Leg Option Orders on TradingView (IBKR TWS Workflow)
How to plan spreads on TradingView charts and execute verticals, iron condors, and calendars as bundled orders in IBKR TWS โ and where OptionTrigger fits for single-leg.
Multi-leg option orders on TradingView are planned on the chart and executed in IBKR TWS (or another broker combo ticket) โ not through TradingView's native IBKR options panel, and not as bundled tickets from OptionTrigger today.
Hub: Trade Options on TradingView ยง spreads. Single-leg path: Connect IBKR.
Multi-leg vs single-leg (know the boundary)
| Order type | Legs | Typical execution surface |
|---|---|---|
| Single-leg | 1 call or put | TWS, OptionTrigger chart click |
| Vertical spread | 2 | TWS combo |
| Iron condor | 4 | TWS combo |
| Butterfly / calendar | 3โ4+ | TWS combo |
OptionTrigger scope: single-leg only with auto TP/SL. Multi-leg belongs in TWS unless you adopt a specialized third-party bot that explicitly supports your spread type.
Why traders still use TradingView for multi-leg
| Planning task | TradingView tool |
|---|---|
| Range / trend thesis | Channels, support/resistance |
| Event risk | Earnings markers, news times |
| Volatility context | IV indicators, historical vol |
| Risk zones | Long/Short drawings โ Position Tools |
Execution quality (combo fill, credit, margin) is decided in TWS, not on the chart overlay.
Recommended workflow (chart โ TWS)
Step 1: Define structure on-chart
- Mark max pain zone or expected range for the holding period.
- Note days to expiration rule (e.g., 30โ45 DTE for learning โ not advice).
- Pick strategy family:
Step 2: Build combo in IBKR TWS
- Open OptionTrader or Strategy Builder.
- Select strategy template (Vertical, Iron Condor, etc.).
- Set strikes from your chart plan.
- Use limit order on net credit/debit; review max loss and margin.
- Submit one bundled ticket.
IBKR combo reference: IBKR Options.
Step 3: Manage lifecycle
| Action | Where |
|---|---|
| Monitor underlying vs short strikes | TradingView alerts |
| Close at profit target (e.g., 50% max gain) | TWS combo close |
| Adjust one wing | TWS leg tools |
| Fast single-leg hedge | OptionTrigger (if in scope) |
Step 4: Paper first
Validate combo fills in paper TWS before size: Paper Trade Options on TradingView.
Legging in vs combo (risk table)
| Approach | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Combo ticket | Synchronized legs; clearer max loss | Worse fill if market wide |
| Leg in manually | Sometimes better per-leg price | Stuck with orphan legs |
| Chart tool per leg | Fast single clicks | Not one atomic spread |
Rule of thumb: If you need defined-risk spread integrity, combo first.
Mixing OptionTrigger with multi-leg
Common hybrid patterns:
- Open spread in TWS โ monitor on TradingView.
- Open spread in TWS โ add single-leg hedge via OptionTrigger when price breaches a line.
- Single-leg entry via OptionTrigger โ later roll or spread in TWS (manual).
Do not expect OptionTrigger to fire four legs from one chart button today.
TradingView + IBKR limitations (fact check)
- TradingView does not currently offer direct IBKR options order entry in the native broker panel.
- Webhook bots may automate alerts โ orders but require correct JSON for each leg โ see TradingView Webhook Automation and Pine Alerts to IBKR.
- Chart-native semi-auto without webhooks: Options Trading Automation Route B.
